Is it raining, snowing, blowing in your hometown?? Winter can be a long, tough road to travel. No matter where you reside in the world, buy a book and snuggle up by the fire.

I haven't embraced the world of e-book buying or reading yet, so for me purchasing a freshly printed book is still an excited thrill. Perusing the numerous aisles of a bookstore, large or small, is always cathartic for the soul. :)

Where in the World?

When searching for that perfect place to live -- whether a house, condo, apartment, perhaps a house boat, log cabin, tree house -- what do you look for? A certain style? A specific number of bedrooms, bathrooms, does it have an attic, basement?? What is the most important factor for choosing an abode other than the price? $$

Location, location, location!

Is it the property, the schools nearby, the dog park down the street?
Is it your hometown? Or someplace other than where you grew up?

Is it the magnificent view?

As a writer, don't forget to include the all important setting in your story.

In creating fiction -- characterization, plot, conflict, theme, style and pacing, the beginning, middle and end -- are all extremely vital to any story. However, if the reader doesn't know the setting of the novel, we can't visualize the story.

There is no sense of place.

In the past couple of years, I have been helping to judge and critique several writing contests for unpublished writers. Some are experienced writers with wonderful skill, some have amazing potential, some are just beginning their long and challenging journey of learning the craft of writing.

What surprises me most in these works is the lack of setting. I estimate 80% of all manuscripts I judge, no matter the experience of the writer, overlooks this fundamental element. Location. Where does the story take place? And why? I feel they don't grasp the fact that setting is an integral part of character development. It is an essential aspect of their background. Why is the main protagonist living where they live? Or why have they moved to a new town? City? State? Country?

Be specific when introducing the setting. Many writers simply make it easy on themselves and the reader by telling up front where the story takes place.

This is perfectly fine if it fits the tone and style of the book. If an author can't weave the actual date and location into their story, it's okay to let the reader know where the novel begins.
However, the setting still needs to be introduced and described in some way. Where and why in Boston? What is the weather? Is it morning with bright sunlight? Or early evening with a luminous full moon rising?

Most authors write what they know. I grew up in Massachusetts so many of my stories feature a location somewhere in New England. I have also lived and traveled around the U.S. and other countries and feel I can confidently portray these other locals in some way as well.
It isn't necessary to have traveled to whatever location you set your story, but you best have a strong sense of place when you set your characters down in the middle of that preference.
With today's technology advancements, and with just a click of a button, we can research geography from around the globe.

Still, if your characters are hiking through the Amazon jungle, you better know how to convey what it really feels like to do this. What kind of trail are they on? What are they wearing? What does the air smell like? What do the trees and foliage look like, feel like?

Perhaps you have created your own mystical world, a place unique and different from all of our everyday lives. It is essential for the reader to visualize and to feel the same human emotions attached to these unusual settings. Think Hogwarts from Harry Potter. Middle Earth from the Lord of the Rings.

And the setting is as equally important to convey if you set your book in your own hometown. You know what it's like to walk or drive through the town, but how does it look and feel to your protagonist? Your antagonist? What are they thinking as they step into the local coffee shop? How does it look to them?

We need to feel the emotions of the characters as the tale unfolds. Create your story, and the locations you choose, to feel as real as possible to you, your characters, and your readers.

A Fresh Start

As hectic and chaotic as the holiday season can be, I love when the new year arrives. It signifies a new beginning, new goals, new ideas -- a do over. Out with the old, in with the new. :)

I had a rather difficult 2011 -- one reason for my lack of posts on this blog -- and I am anticipating a better 2012.

With several resolutions in my mind, I'm ready for the tasks ahead....

Already 2012 is offering up some overwhelming challenges I don't wish to face, but I must stay strong and attack them head on. I will be moving -- again. However, with the help of some wonderful friends and family, I should make it through okay. I also lost my job a couple of months ago so time to reevaluate my future prospects.

I have a book to complete, another one already swirling through my mind, and a third that needs some major revisions. I plan to concentrate on acquiring a literary agent for my first completed novel -- something I didn't do at all in 2011 -- with the hopes of being published.

Another goal is to continue to embrace and comprehend the ever-changing, fast-paced world of technology. Unlike so many others, this is not easy for me.

There is also the eternal lose weight resolution. This year I anticipate to actually accomplish my goal of losing the extra 40 pounds I've been dragging around with me the past few years.

And I'll be writing here more often. (I posted only 9 times all last year) Won't be difficult to beat those numbers! Keep checking back. :)

It's official -- the gates are open -- it's time to submit to the RWA Golden Heart and RITA contests.
*If you are an unpublished writer of romance, have completed a manuscript, then you are eligible to enter the Romance Writers of America Golden Heart contest.
*If you are published and have a book with a 2011 copyright date, you are eligible for the RITA contest.
***You do not need to be a member of RWA to enter. Please check the RWA website for guidelines for both the RITA and Golden Heart contests.

It has been several years since I entered the Golden Heart -- I'm not published yet -- so this year I plan to submit again. I have two completed manuscripts. Now I have to decide which one to enter. Oh what the heck, I think I'll do both.... :)

The finalists are announced in March and the winners are revealed at the national Romance Writers of America conference held every summer. The summer of 2012 it will be in Anaheim, California. Hope to see you there!

I never thought I'd say this.... but I miss Fall in New England. The vibrant colors from the changing leaves, the brisk air, the whiff of smoke fires, along with pumpkin and corn husk displays everywhere.

Down here in central Florida we have what I consider the fake version of Fall . They actually sell plastic pumpkins and gourds, and other various harvest displays for transplanted northerners to set out in their southern homes. There are real pumpkins to buy and enjoy but they have a tendency to rot very quickly.

Enjoy the colorful leaves and cooler temps.

On Friday March 25th, Romance Writers of America -- over 10,000 members strong -- will announce the finalists in their annual RITA and Golden Heart contests. Every year the national RWA organization hosts the contest for published (RITA) and unpublished (Golden Heart) authors.

This year the RITA award is for outstanding books published in 2010 in 12 different romance categories: Young Adult, Inspirational, Novel with Strong Romantic Elements, Novella, Contemporary Series, Contemporary Series Suspense/Adventure, Historical, Regency Historical, Paranormal, Romantic Suspense, Contemporary Single Title, and Best First Book.

The Golden Heart includes the same categories except for the Novella and Best First Book. Once the finalists have been contacted, RWA makes the announcement on their website.

Come the end of June, at the national RWA conference which this year will be held in New York City, there is a formal awards ceremony where the winners are announced.

It is a prestigious honor and recognition of the hardworking writer to be a finalist. At the conference awards ceremony the recipients of each award -- along with their book editors for the RITA's -- head to the stage to accept their award and give a speech. :)

Last summer I was thrilled to be able to attend the RWA conference held in Orlando, Florida. Not only were there dozens of amazing workshops to attend, and fellow writers to meet, publishers and booksellers in attendance, agent and editor appointments, best selling keynote speakers, a literacy signing featuring hundreds of authors -- the finale was the fabulous awards dinner and ceremony.

I'm not published yet and would have entered the Golden Heart but life interrupted and didn't make it this year. Good luck to all my writer friends who have entered the contests!!

The last thing I remember we were celebrating the holidays and suddenly I woke up and it's now March 17th! How did that happen??
I haven't even made my New Years resolutions or posted my yearly goals. Crikey.

This photo is a recent picture of one of the houses I lived in growing up. This house has some amazing history, including some mischievous ghosts, and dates back to the early 1800's. I think it was built around 1830. It is located in Massachusetts and it brings me a lovely measure of peace to see it. :)

It also has some pretty green landscaping to celebrate the Irish in all of us.

Three Years and Counting

This week marks the third anniversary since I began writing this blog. It has been an enjoyable journey, learning the intricacies of blogging, posting about fiction writing, and promoting my fellow authors.

The past three years have been a time of growth and struggle in my personal life and my life as a writer. My plan is too keep writing my blog with thoughts toward developing a website sometime in the not-so-distant future. Also to continue working on my manuscripts and learning the craft of fiction writing.

My pursuit toward publication continues. :)

During the long, steamy summer, I fell off the blogging wagon. But I'm back and plan to make up for my absence with numerous interesting, insightful posts.

Romance Flourishes in Central Florida

This coming week the Romance Writers of America organization is hosting their annual national conference in Lake Buena Vista, Florida. Better known as the Walt Disney World Resort. To me there is no greater mix than the positive energy of Walt Disney, Mickey Mouse, and the power of love and romance.

One of the reasons I love to read and write stories with a romantic theme is the offer of hope they provide. Hope is what truly keeps us going as we navigate the bumpy, turbulent world of real life. All fiction offers us an escape into a different world from our own, and I love to read a variety of books, but nothing can compare to the emotionally satisfying prose of romance.

The theme may be romance but there are so many genres -- and sub-genres -- of romance it can be exhausting trying to understand them all. Historical, Suspense, Thriller, Paranormal, Inspirational, Contemporary, Young Adult, Erotica, to name a few. It's even tricky to sub-categorize my own stories and I write contemporary. But to be competitive while working to find an agent and editor interested in taking a chance on my manuscripts, I need to comprehend what market to pursue for my books. :)

With dozens of workshops offered in publishing, marketing and craft, and numerous publisher spotlights, as well as four fabulous keynote speakers -- Nora Roberts, Jayne Ann Krentz, Sherrilyn Kenyon, and Sabrina Jeffries -- the opportunities will be endless.

Also offered at the conference is the chance for writers to pitch their stories to agents and editors. This is a tremendous occasion for editors from nearly all the publishing houses, big and small, to discover new authors; as well as dozens of literary agents seeking new clients to possibly represent.

As an unpublished novelist working toward becoming a better writer, with the hopes of finding an agent and a publisher, this is a priceless opportunity.

The one event offered at the conference open to the general public is the "Readers For Life" Literacy Autographing session. It will be held at the Walt Disney World Dolphin Resort on Wednesday July 28th from 5:30 PM - 7:30 PM. If you're in the Orlando area this coming week this is a wonderful time to meet your favorite authors and buy their books for them to sign.
Remember it's for a very important cause.

Along with the four authors already mentioned, also signing: Linda Howard, Suzanne Brockmann, Kresley Cole, Meg Cabot, Julia Quinn, Robyn Carr, Karen Rose, Ally Carter, Stephanie Laurens, and....over 300 other published authors as well! Wow.
And many of the amazing authors mentioned, and countless others, will be presenting workshops during the three day conference.

I became a member of RWA six years ago and this will be my first national conference. I look forward to seeing many of my fellow writer friends, making new friends, and learning as much as possible about the world of romance writing and publishing.

I hope to have lots of fun adventures to report and pictures to post when I return home.

Let's Write

We writers love to talk about writing!

We study and learn the craft of writing. We gather with other writers in whatever venue available -- in person, online, by phone. We take time to imagine our stories and characters, mull over plot and conflict, and make myriad decisions on setting, voice, pacing, and dialogue. It can be a rewarding and challenging pursuit.

However, there is only one way to finish the story of your heart, or your latest book under contract -- sit down and write!

The act of writing is a long, lonely road and often times we need incentive to keep ourselves focused with our eye on the prize....a completed manuscript. We have so many distractions in our demanding hectic lives, we need whatever we can to keep our fingers on the keyboard or a pen in hand (yes, some people do write in long hand occasionally) ;)

For me I like to set writing goals. Long and short term goals. Even when life turns tough, I try to at least adjust my goals so I don't tumble too far off my projected path.

A couple of suggestions:

*Write everyday. Even if it's nearly impossible to juggle your busy schedule, if you're truly committed to writing and finishing a lengthy novel, write everyday. Even ten to fifteen minute increments can be enough to spur on a productive daily habit.

*Perhaps keep a notebook handy to chart your daily progress. Whether tracking word count, page count, chapter count, it's a wonderful way to keep yourself and your story moving forward. Don't worry there is always the revision process to smooth out the clumps and bumps.

*Find a critique partner or a critique group. There is nothing better to help keep the flow and momentum of writing your story than fellow writers offering encouragement, suggestions, and occasionally kicking your butt.

I am a member of the Tampa Area Romance Writers where I have met some wonderful writer friends who I occasionally share some of my work. Sometimes one on one, sometimes in a critique group gathering.

I am also incredibly fortunate to have three of the best critique partners to share my writing and my life. Each one is an amazing writer, friend, and even better.... my siblings.

Prologue

The air was raw with February the morning Bobby Lee Fuller found the first body. They would say he found it, when in truth what he'd done was trip over what was left of Arnette Gantry. Either way, the end was the same, and Bobby Lee would live that wide white face floating into his dreams for a long time to come.

That was the first paragraph from Carnal Innocence by Nora Roberts. If there was ever a question why Nora Roberts, creative author of over 200 books, was as popular as she is, this beginning is proof she knows how open a story.

Intelligent, prolific author, John D. MacDonald, opens his novel One Fearful Yellow Eye like this:

Around and around we went, like circling through wads of lint in a dirty pocket. We'd been in that high blue up yonder where it was a bright cold clear December afternoon, and then we had to go down into that guck, as it was the intention of the airline and the airplane driver to put the 727 down at O'Hare.

Another John D. MacDonald Travis McGee novel The Scarlet Ruse begins as follows:

The hackney coach rumbled under the arched stone passage and rolled to a halt in the torchlit innyard, but even before the driver could throw the brake, let alone descend to assist his solitary passenger, the door swung open and she jumped out -- a tempestuous, tousle-headed eighteen-year-old with the fire of rebellion in her dark eyes.

I love the beginning of Lady of Desire because we are introduced to the heroine of the story immediately. We learn she is young, head strong, and out alone at night -- something no young lady of means should ever do in 1816 England.

Of course it's not wise for young ladies in 2010 Boston to be out alone at night either. Check out this next first paragraph:

Prologue

Annie Jefferson raced down the dormitory steps, her heart pounding. It was late, long after midnight. She burst through the heavy door into a blast of frigid air which New Englanders termed brisk. With that thought she shivered and nearly smiled as she skidded on a patch of ice, and to her dismay spotted the rear lights of the campus bus as it chugged away down the dark, deserted street.

This beginning is from a yet-to-be published romantic suspense titled Breath of Fear by aspiring author Cynthia Sherrick.

You may have realized by now my tastes in novels run to contemporary suspense and mystery, as well as historical suspense -- all with at least a hint of passion and romance.

Preferably more than just a hint. :)

Part One

Every great story begins with an equally compelling beginning. Hopefully.

Ideally.

How often do you pick up a book in a bookstore, read the book jacket blurb, and think "Wow" this book sounds wonderful? Then you flip it open, read the first paragraph... and hope it lives up to your expectations.

As writers we are forever striving to improve our craft. We attend workshops, classes, critique groups, and study books on the art of creative writing. We write, rewrite, and revise our manuscripts constantly, all to produce our best work possible -- including the all-important first page.

But how about that perfect first paragraph?
How do we choose just the right moment in time to begin our precious tale? How do we decide which character and setting to use to catapult our words off the page? Do we begin with narrative? Dialogue? Action? Reflection?

In my opinion, here are some examples of well written and eye-catching first paragraphs:

The following is from Betina Krahn's Make Me Yours:

England's Lake Country, 1887
"All I want is to be left alone to run my own life and tend my business in peace. Is that too bloody much to ask?" Mariah Eller muttered as she pulled her cloak tighter against the wind-whipped rain and squinted, trying to make out the lights from Eller-Stapleton Inn. There were at least a dozen things she'd rather be doing at nine o'clock on a rainy October evening...most involving a glowing fire and toasty slippers.

I love this paragraph because it tells us so much about the female protagonist and sets up the potential for some strong conflict. We learn in the first line what this woman wants in her life -- to be left alone to run her inn. But right away we know there is imminent trouble that forces her from her home at night, into the cold autumn rain.

I can't resist, here's the second paragraph:

"Hurry, miz!" The boy with the lantern looked back anxiously and halted for her to catch up. "Pa said they wus about to blow the windows out."

I'm hooked. :)

Here is an excerpt from Montana Sky by Nora Roberts:

Being dead didn't make Jack Mercy less of a son of a bitch. One week of dead didn't offset sixty-eight years of living mean. Plenty of people gathered by his grave would be happy to say so.

What an intriguing paragraph. In two sentences we learn a multitude about a character who is already dead at the beginning of the book. His death propels the story and several conflicts develop from this opening.

Out of the Storm by JoAnn Ross begins like this:

Prologue
The last day of Sissy Sotheby-Beale's life dawned another Low Country scorcher. It was dog days in the South, when any canine possessing the sense the good Lord gave a flea could be found sprawled on a veranda beneath a slow-moving bladed fan.

Can't you just feel the heat? I love the author's blend of tone, locale, and the foreshadow of the woman's death. I definitely want to read this one. :)

And from Janet Evanovich's first Stephanie Plum novel One For The Money:

There are some men who enter a woman's life and screw it up forever. Joseph Morelli did this to me -- not forever, but periodically.

In two sentences the author sets the tenor with her signature humor and wit.

Sandra Brown, who is one of my favorite romantic suspense authors, begins French Silk like this:

The Reverend Jackson Wilde had been shot in the head, the heart, and the testicles. Right off Cassidy figured that was a significant clue.

Although there is a prologue in French Silk this is the beginning of Chapter 1. Not only does it grab us with a murder in the first sentence, but we learn the victim is some sort of man of God. I'm reading more!

And the last excerpt for now:

I first saw him at my brother's wedding, at the back of the reception tent. He stood with the insolent, loose-jointed slouch of someone who'd rather spend his time in a pool hall. Although he was well dressed, it was obvious he didn't make his living sitting behind a desk. No amount of Armani tailoring could soften that build -- big-framed and rugged-- like a roughneck or a bull rider. His long fingers, clasped gently around a champagne flute, could have snapped the crystal stem with ease.

This is the first paragraph from Blue-Eyed Devil by Lisa Kleypas. I think it's fascinating how the author uses vivid character description to begin her story. His name is Hardy Cates; he is most definitely a blue-eyed devil and one of my most all time favorite characters. :)

Blogging seems to have become a national obsession. Anyone who is anybody has a blog. At least many of the people I know in the creative world -- artists, musicians, and writers -- have their own blogs or websites and well they should have. It's a wonderful inexpensive way to communicate and network.
For a writer, it's imperative we let our fellow writers and readers know about our projects and where our latest published works can be found.

So... when my first book comes out, I'll let you all know. :)

I'm still on the quest for an agent, with my eye on publication, so it may be a while yet before my first book is nestled on the bookstore shelf ready for purchase.

Since I'm ramping up my dedication to polishing one book, finishing another, and selling the third, I will be blogging only once a week. (Which is more than I do sometimes, anyway.)
Now, however, I will have a schedule.

Goals....

Okay, it's almost February and I'm just now coming out of hibernation to post about my 2010 goals. Are you ready?

Write more, lose weight. :)

Sound familiar? I do believe the goals were the same as last year and the year before, but it doesn't make them any less true or necessary.

At the moment, I am working on three books simultaneously.

My first is completed. However, I'm doing some very early spring cleaning, polishing the story to make it really shine and prepared for my 2010 literary agent search.

Book two is completed as a semi-polished rough draft (lot's of dusty corners) with some rather pesky plot issues. Pulling out the mop and doing some major revising.

Then there is book three. It has quickly become the book of my heart and I can't seem to keep my hands off the words or the characters out of my head.
So, I will keep moving forward, writing, plotting, and listening to all my characters demands and wishes.

All three of my books are 100,000 word contemporary romantic suspense novels with the emphasis on the passionate relationships of my characters.

My official 2010 goals are to complete all three novels and continue the search for an agent to represent my work. With the ultimate objective to have my books published.

I also need to lose weight and live a healthier lifestyle. (okay, who doesn't?) I will continue on the eternal quest to eat less and exercise more! ;)

Good luck to everyone with all their goals. Let's make 2010 a year of published dreams!

Looking Back...

Where did the year go?

And where's my inspiration?

Ahh. There it is.

There's nothing like the pristine beauty of nature to put the harsh realities of life back into perspective.

This past year was not my most productive year in regards to writing or my other objectives. I had ambitious goals for 2009 -- some were achieved, but I fell short in attaining all of them. In reflection there are several reasons (or excuses) I could share....but I won't. ;)

In regards to my writing, I did begin a new novel -- my third -- and I'm very excited about the story. I also worked on revisions on my second book. Even so, my ambitions were rather high, so I did not accomplish all I intended.

I did lose weight, although I ended up dealing with major stress and put half of it back on. (Okay maybe a tad more than half) and I queried only two agents instead of the dozens I had planned.

While it was a difficult year for me personally and professionally, I'm looking ahead to 2010 with a positive attitude, a fresh set of goals, and eager anticipation for a very productive year!

So...

...bring it on!

Fortified with my shopping list and checking it twice, I sat at the Barnes and Noble Cafe sipping an extremely strong cup of coffee. I pumped an abundance of sugar into my system as well by indulging with a piece of "to die for" classic coffee cake. Heaven. In other words I was out among the masses doing my "holiday shopping".
While gazing out the window toward the parking lot and nibbling on my coffee cake, I spotted a man striding through the maze of cars and people who looked very much like the actor, Larry David. I followed his progress as he made his way to the Barnes and Noble entrance, an expression of relief crossing his face at making it to his destination. I know how he feels.
At closer inspection it wasn't Larry David.

Brushing the crumbs from my hands and taking one final gulp of caffeine, I stood from my chair. Time to get going. Time to mingle with the other shoppers, elbowing through to the best displays, struggling not to buy something for myself, and clicking off in my head as I pick up fun and exciting gifts for my family and friends. ;)

Ahhh... the holidays.

The Long Haul

Writing a lengthy fiction novel is very much like long-distance driving. It takes time, it takes effort, it takes planning.

It works best if one maps out their journey, choosing areas of rest and refueling a head of time, plotting their daily mileage goals, with the ultimate outcome to arrive safely at their final destination.

Recently I embarked on a driving journey that was unmistakable long, tiring, and challenging. The first hurdle to overcome was taking the trip alone. This encompasses a multitude of difficulties one doesn't usually encounter when traveling with a spouse, family, or friends.

**The first challenge is doing all the actual driving myself. There is no one else to take over when fatigue settles in, or a difficult stretch of road is approaching, or a congested city looms on the horizon. I was also pushing to make the trip as quickly as possible. (This, I have discovered, is not a safe, healthy option) But I did it. ;]

**The second is the quandary of navigating. I may know where I'm headed, my route, my exit number, etc. But with no one sitting in the passenger seat, helping to read the signs, follow the map, and yell out "It's time, turn here!" it can mean trouble.....Okay, one of those nifty modern inventions called a GPS would have been nice, not to mention cruise control, but alas, I had neither.

**The third is the loneliness factor. All alone out on the American highway can be daunting. Checking into motels alone is not a fan favorite, but can be done. Be aware of your surroundings and stay safe. On the other hand, I really enjoyed the alone-time, as well. I could listen to my style of music (loud or soft), I could stop when I wished -- or not. I could eat when I wanted, where I wanted, and what I wanted.
I also used the many hours to plot a couple of stories in my head while driving the long stretches of lonely road.

**The fourth is dealing with the mile by mile, endless hurdles -- traffic, weather, tolls, construction, accidents, crazy drivers, and lets not forget the kings of the American highway... the big rigs. The only way to handle these invariable barriers is with consistent, cautious driving.

One of the parallels between a long driving trip alone and writing an extensive novel is experience. I did not embark on this journey lightly. I have many years' driving experience. I have driven a multitude of vehicles all over the United States, Canada, and Europe. Learning the rules of the road and honing my skills to know what to do (hopefully) in any driving emergency.

While writing a novel, there are endless challenges, as well. We choose a genre, setting, characters, plot, conflict, style and pacing -- working hard day in and day out, mile after mile, to stay on the rocky path and reach our final destination -- to finish the book. There is the constant struggle and joy to learn the craft of writing, to understand the complexities of weaving together a gripping story, pushing forward to reach the point of writing the words -- The End. We have to continue to overcome the bumpy potholes in the road toward accomplishing our writing goals. :)

My driving expedition began in central Florida and ultimately ended in central Maine. Roughly 1700 miles one way. (Of course, I had to drive back to Florida, as well.)

My fuel efficient 2007 Toyota Yaris was a constant, reliable companion -- loaded with my luggage, books, CD's, camera, cell phone, snack food, travel mug, road atlas, and two coolers. I also had a notebook where I kept a journal of my travel experiences. There's a game I love to play as well whenever I drive -- writing down license plates from different states. Whoops, not so easy when all alone. However, I solved this dilemma by memorizing the plates as I spotted them and wrote them down whenever I stopped. (The final tally was 37 states and four provinces) I also kept track of names and places along the way to research for possible story ideas and settings. All fabulous ways to keep my mind alert and my body awake.

My reward for taking on this two week quest to New England and back again, was the pleasure of being with family and friends, and visiting some beautiful scenic areas.

All the sudden it's the last week of October. Yikes! Not certain how that happened. The day job has been very busy and beyond stressful. (company merger -- need I say more?)

I'm diving back into my writing and have been making strides, although I haven't hit my main yearly goal. I probably won't finish both my manuscripts as hoped, but will keep forging ahead. Had a tough year. Between work and taking on new responsibilities with the Tampa Area Romance Authors, as well as joining an online critique group, contest judging, and personal issues, I had difficulty keeping up with my own writing.
Now, I've cut back a bit and hope to keep my writing a top priority. :)

My characters are gearing up for stormy skies ahead.

Slump

I'm still here. I'm simply in a major, full-blown, down and dirty, writing slump. My WIP is swirling through my head constantly... plot, conflict, characterization. All trouble with a capital T.

There is always something keeping me from just sitting down and writing. My WIP needs so much work it's paralyzing my creative muse.

What to do, where to go??

I visited Maine this summer and had the immense pleasure of kayaking on this tranquil, pristine lake. No sign of human life for miles around. (Well, except for my friends)

My idea of heaven!

With this idyllic image in my head I shall move forward and attempt to rediscover my creative flow and my story. All my characters are sitting around, sipping coffee, taking a break -- hoping I'll leave them alone.

Okay gang, wake up and prepare to be shoved back into conflict and strife! I'm back....

Why Vampires?

It seems everywhere you turn these days there are stories about vampires. HBO has produced a television series called True Blood featuring characters who live for darkness and the taste of the scarlet liquid. Last season there was a short-lived television show on one of the major networks called Moonlight, where the main character was a private investigator as well as a vampire.

I've never watched either show.

Author Anne Rice wrote the novel Interview with a Vampire which was a best seller, and went on to become a hit movie starring Tom Cruise, Brad Pitt and a very young Kirsten Dunst.

Again... never read the book, never saw the movie.

And one would have to be dead (or almost dead) or living in a coffin not to have heard of the Twilight series by Stephanie Meyer....Best selling books about teenage vampires that has gone on to become a popular film. Would it surprise you to learn I haven't read the books or seen the movie?

At this point, I think not.

And who could forget the widely popular daytime drama Dark Shadows which aired from 1966-1971, and featured one of the most renowned vampires, Barnabas Collins.

Today there are so many books featuring vampires it makes my head spin. Oh no, that would make me possessed by the devil!

It doesn't take a telepathic mind-reader, or a vampire, phantom, witch, or any other frightening other-worldly figure to know, I don't care for paranormal stories.

Recently, I asked my friend Annie, who devours vampire stories, what the attraction was for her and vampires?
Her answer: They're sexy.

Really?

Obviously many people agree, and it's wonderful for anyone writing and publishing in the vampire genre. Just some of the many authors who have written novels featuring vampires:

P.C Cast, Shannon Drake, Christine Feehan, Charlaine Harris, Sheila Holland, Ellen Schreiber, John Steakley, and Cecilia Tan.

Road Trip

It's that time of year again when the kids are out of school, the days are longer and warmer, and everyone heads out on their summer vacation. Well, I live in Florida where the weather goes from warm to steamy hot, and I don't have kids to worry about, but I do have a job and it's time for my summer vacation. :)

After considering all my financial options to get myself from central Florida to northern New England, I have decided to drive. That's 1500 miles one way. Phew. Okay, everyone thinks I'm a little crazy -- which of course I am -- but because of my need to have a vehicle up there when I arrive, I'm driving.

Understanding my history with long-distance driving my decision may not seem so far-fetched. At twenty-years-old, my best friend Annie and I bought an old van and fixed it up. We took two months to explore the vast United States, camping along the way. We had an awesome time driving down the east coast, along the gulf coast, through exhilarating mountain passes, into the dusty southwest, reaching our goal -- California. Our many exciting adventures will be a blog for another day. Fortunately Annie kept a journal of our trip so many of the delicious details are preserved forever. Without revealing my age, I will say it was many, many moons ago. ;)

Two months after that trip I boarded a plane and flew back to California to join the largest, traveling repertory acting company in the world. Covenant Players. I spent four years on the road traveling throughout the United States, western Canada, and parts of Europe with some amazing people and in all sorts of vehicles. My education behind the wheel was priceless. I had acquired an international drivers license so I was able to drive in the USA and Europe as well.

I own a Toyota Yaris that's fun to drive and boasts great gas mileage. So weighing my options -- flying vs. driving -- driving it is.

As a member of the Romance Writers of America, I have the opportunity to enter dozens of romance writing contests every year. According to the RWA website, there are 126 state chapters of RWA in the United States, 6 in Canada, as well as 19 special interest chapters. The special interest chapters are online chapters catering to specific genres and needs - historical, mystery/suspense, paranormal, erotica, chick lit, etc.

Many of the RWA chapters sponsor writing contests to raise money to support their chapters and enhance the writing skills and publishing opportunities for all members.

Some of the contests are geared to the unpublished writer, some specifically for the published author, and some include opportunities for both. With nearly 10,000 members of RWA, the competition to final in any of the chapter contests is tough. The national RWA hosts the RITA and GOLDEN HEART contests. The RITA is for books copyrighted within the year of entering the contest, and the GOLDEN HEART is for unpublished writers with a completed manuscript.

If a writer is looking to enter a contest, there are several factors to take into consideration.

Money: The cost of the contest, including postage, paper and ink. Although many contests are going all electronic so the latter isn't always a concern. However, for published writers there is the cost of shipping their books.

Time: Researching contests and the amount of time to polish the pages being submitted.

Final Judges: Is the final round judge an editor who works for a publishing house that publishes the genre you write and the word-count of your manuscript? Or perhaps an agent you would want to represent you and your work?

Scoresheet and critique: Many of the contests post their scoresheets on their websites, and there is usually some kind of critiquing offered -- but not always. This helps in the decision making process whether to enter a particular contest. Keep in mind, the national Golden Heart contest does not offer any critiquing, you simply receive a letter with your final scores.

Which contest to enter: There are a variety of contests to consider for unpublished writers, so depending on your need or expertise you can make your decision. For example the GOLDEN HEART can only be entered if you have a completed manuscript, but the first round judges only read the first three chapters and synopsis.
Other choices available are: 1st chapter contests, synopsis, query letters, individual scenes such as where the hero and heroine first meet, or first kiss, or first time making love. Some offer a contest where the scene features the villain.

So, make your decision on whether you desire a critique, or the editor/agent is one you want, or the prize is enticing, etc.

Be aware, however, that if you have a piece of writing polished and perfect and your goal is to get in front of an editor or agent, you better have the rest of the manuscript finished. The professional editors and agents sign on to judge these contests with the ultimate goal in finding fresh, undiscovered writers ready to be published. I have heard many stories of finalists having requests for partial and full manuscripts and they aren't finished writing the book. Not only does this make RWA look bad, it's a waste of time for the editor, and unfair to other contestants who might have finaled in their place with a completed manuscript.

That said, there are many newbie writers who use the contest circuit to enhance their writing skills with the critiques offered. As long as they submit knowing their piece needs work and they probably won't final.

It's about being professional. Follow the contest rules and regulations with the understanding of your responsibilities.

I usually enter only two contests a year due to limited funds. Although I'm on the prowl for one right now, so wish me luck, and here goes...

I've been in Florida for over three years now and have never seen this flowering plant before. It bloomed from a gray branch shooting along the ground seemingly overnight back in February. It bloomed for about three weeks before it began to shrivel into a brown, dead-looking plant.

Recently the branch was broken (not certain what happened) so now it won't bloom again unless more shoots magically appear.

Movie Night

I love a great movie, a fantastic book, a riveting play, a fabulous TV show, a stunning piece of artwork. Many people will agree on what is a great creative work, and many will express their opinions over what constitutes a disastrous creation.
The real truth -- Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder.

Recently I watched a movie that came highly recommended by several people. Four different friends told me (more than once) to rent and watch the movie Taken.

So I watched it.

Taken (2008)
Starring Liam Neeson

Taken is about a man, Bryan Mills, played by Neeson, who after years as some sort of CIA/spy operative is retired and living a quiet life in California near his ex-wife and daughter. Hoping to rebuild a relationship with the daughter, Bryan spends his time hanging with old spy buddies and thinking about his daughter.

Bryan's seventeen year old daughter, Kim, is allowed to accompany her eighteen year old friend, Amanda, to France. (Really??) Within hours of landing in Paris, both girls are kidnapped by foreign-speaking men planning to sell them to the highest bidder. (Wow!?)

Perhaps the best scene in the film is when Kim is actually being kidnapped and talking to her father on her cell phone. Bryan Mills snaps into spy mode and instructs Kim on what to do to make his job of finding her more efficient. So as the girl is dragged out from under a bed, screaming, we get to feel the horrific emotions of Bryan the father.
Bryan the ex-spy takes over and the film moves on.

That was the last really interesting scene in the movie.

One of the problems I had with this film was the casting. The daughter, Kim, is played by Maggie Grace, who looks like she's thirty-five instead of seventeen. A younger, more innocent looking actress might have helped audience sympathy.
The best element of this film is by far Liam Neeson -- one the finest actors working today. He brings riveting life to a character and film that otherwise would have really fallen flat.

As the character of Bryan Mills roars through Europe beating and killing everyone in sight, often five and six men at a time (Wow!? He's 57 years old!) my interest in the story wanes.
Erratic camera movement, sporadic sub-titles, way too many bad guys, car chase scenes, violent fight scenes, and finally a rescue scene that seems far too easy..... and Kim and Dad are back home in sunny California.

Hmm... okay. So, what of her friend, Amanda, you ask? Well, I'm not certain. At one point in the film Bryan discovers several girls lying around in drugged stupors -- and kind of rescues one because she is wearing Kim's jacket. He does hover over another one that looks like Amanda, checking her pulse. She has apparently died of a drug overdose.

Compared to so many crappy films being made today, this one really isn't too bad. What makes it frustrating is it could have been excellent. A more realistic screenplay, better direction, and a stronger supporting cast would have made Taken a first-rate film instead of a step above mediocre.

Goals Revisited

In January, I posted about my writing goals and my plans to attain them. I also mentioned my pursuit of getting healthier and losing weight.

RECAP: One of my goals was to finish the revisions on my romantic suspense novel Island Moon by July 25th. Another objective was to finish the first full draft of Breath of Winter, another romantic suspense by December 1st. :) I came up with a schedule to work on both books simultaneously, with revisions on Island Moon four days a week, pushing through with Breath of Winter, three days a week.
Just getting in practice for when I have real deadlines!! Here's to positive thinking. :)

Mickey has been a great pal with helping me meet my writing goals!

UPDATE: Okay, not all good intentions work the same way in our heads as they do on paper. Writing two books at the same time worked for only a few weeks, due in part to life and new commitments which entered into the picture. (Have I mentioned I have a full-time job outside the home as well?)
My end objective remains the same: Finish IM by July 25th, and December 1st for BOW, only my plan to make that happen has changed. I'm working exclusively on IM until July 25th and when finished... on to the next. :)

My weight loss is progressing well, although very slowly. Since January, I have lost 10 pounds. I have reached a plateau for a few weeks, but am ready now to recommit to this goal and make it happen! I need to lose more.

Thanks to Mickey for pushing me to lose weight!

To Prologue... or Not

Prologue: (from the Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary)

a. The preface or introduction to a literary work.
b. An introductory or preceding event or development.

I love to settle down in my comfy chair, open up a novel, and begin reading a brand new story. I especially love when there is a prologue.

Many readers insist they don't like prologues and even go so far as not to read them. What!? Why would you read a book and not read the beginning? Just because it says the word prologue?
I know several writers who choose not to include them in their work. I have also read published novels that include a prologue when in fact it should say chapter one.

To the best of my knowledge, I don't believe there are any hard fast rules pertaining to the use and construction of a prologue in a fiction novel. They come in every shape and size with an array of content. I have read books where the prologue was a mere two sentences long and others where they stretched into thirty pages. In both cases they worked well.

In a mystery/suspense/thriller novel, a prologue can be used to set up the crime, or tragic life-changing event. Often times the prologue might be in the villain/antagonist's point-of-view. This can enhance the tension when the main characters are introduced. We, the reader, know something our main characters don't. We feel the suspense as they head innocently toward the trap set up by the nasty villain. :)

Perhaps in a family saga novel, a prologue can be used to glimpse a piece of family history. A past event used to set-up the current storyline.

I write romantic suspense novels. In each of my three manuscripts, I begin with a prologue. Each prologue introduces a tragic event that affects the main characters in their present day life. They are life-changing events that help propel the conflict and characters throughout the books.

Over the years I have had each of my three novels critiqued by several different people. Often times it's one of my critique partners, sometimes in a face to face critique group, and occasionally through contests where the prologue/first chapter is judged by an anonymous writer. I usually do quite well in contests, scoring high, but I don't often final, and it seems to be because of my use of prologues.

Is it because other writers don't like prologues? Or they don't get the fact that it's a prologue and not chapter 1? Or am I starting in the wrong place, including too much back story? Probably all of these elements to some degree.
The real questions: How does the prologue enhance the story? Is it well written? Is it really necessary?

Prologues continue to be a great way to introduce conflict, show an historic event, steep the reader in the evil villain's point-of-view, enable us to view our protagonist as a child... or where ever your imagine takes you.

This past week The Romance Writers of America announced the finalists in the national RITA and GOLDEN HEART contests.

Let's Get Published!

I recently went into my file where I keep all the names, dates, and other pertinent information in regards to contacting agents and editors. It had been a while since I visited this not-so-long list of who and when I sent a query, so I was shocked to learn I queried exactly two agents in all of 2008. What!?

My pursuit to get published will never become a reality with this kind of I'll do it tomorrow attitude. As mentioned in my earlier post about Goals, I have a strong personality trait (flaw) called procrastination. Never so evident as in my search for a literary agent.

I truly admire the writers who are working diligently to get their projects out there. It is the difference between getting noticed with a contract in hand....or never getting published. Keep in mind, however, if you are searching for an agent or publisher, make absolutely certain you have a finished, polished manuscript! Don't waste their time or yours with a project that's not proficient and needs major revisions.

Writing everyday has become an attainable objective for me, now I need to work on the challenge of sending out query letters to agents. My completed romantic suspense Summer Light is ready to be considered for publication. As an active member of Romance Writers of America and the Tampa Area Romance Authors, I have many resources available to me to augment my quest for an agent. Through the national RWA website, there is information -- for members only -- on the latest agents and publishers.

Time to get busy! :)

Goals

There's been much discussion lately about setting goals and achieving them. This is a process as individual as each one of us. Like in our writing -- we are all unique -- writing different genres, styles, and lengths. Novels, short stories, non-fiction, essays, poetry, song lyrics -- wherever our passions lead us...

I am a master procrastinator! This is an irrefutable truth. Because of this personality trait, I have to work extra hard to attain whatever goals I have set for myself. For years, I worked to finish my YA novel, but never could. I realize now one reason for this was never having any realistic goals to help complete that book. I would work on it whenever I got around to it, whenever I felt like it, but usually only when I had a critique group to attend, or a conference on the horizon. And after several years of hearing myself chat about my work-in-progress in a group of fellow writers, babbling the same rhetoric year after year, I knew it was time for a serious change in my writing process.

When I began the journey to write and finish a 100,000 word romantic suspense novel, I set smaller, attainable goals for myself. I finally admitted this would be the only way to complete the book.

Here's some goal examples: Write ten chapters in three months, write and revise prologue in one week, take a writing class, write 25,000 words in six months, write 25,000 words in four months, find a critique partner, rewrite 1st 1/2 of the book in four months, write twice a week, write three times a week, write for ten minutes everyday.
Etc, etc...

To achieve a goal:
*First decide what you want to achieve. In regards to writing, you may have a project you've started but can't seem to complete (been there, done that), or perhaps you have an idea percolating ready to get down on paper (or typed into your computer). Whatever you decide, make certain you are ready and passionate about your project. Otherwise it will make finishing the work and achieving your goals much more difficult. And it will be difficult.

*Once you've made the decision on your project, decide when you want it finished. Two years? Six months, one year? If you are an unpublished writer, set a deadline and stick to it. For a published author, if an editor is waiting for your finished project in six months, you damn well better have it for him/her in six months.

As much as we would like the luxury of being at home writing all day, most of us have day jobs --not to mention all of the other turmoil in our lives -- so we have to adapt.

*Again, set your goals to short, attainable time lines to start. If a new project, perhaps your goal could be: Write and finish chapter one by Jan 10th or Jan 17th, or whatever you feel would realistically work for you and your schedule. Then create a way to adjust your day to day life to meet that goal, and stick with it. For me, I like to set a longer goal such as, write and finish new book by December 12th, 2009, and then set shorter goals to attain the final objective of completing the book.

This year, I have set three major goals for myself.
A. Write and complete rough draft of book three.
B. Rewrite and revise book two.
C. Find an agent/editor for book one.

Phew, it makes me exhausted just thinking about attaining these goals -- and my procrastination instincts kick in big time. I have a whole year, no sweat.

The truth is I have to work really hard to write one book in a year, (I haven't accomplished it yet) so to take on two, in various stages, is overwhelming. Also, the amount of work involved to query agents/editors, enter contests, networking, and anything else to get my book published, can be extremely time consuming.

So, there is much work to do. The only way to complete these writing projects to my satisfaction is to set numerous goals; to decide how much time to devote to each task and make it work.
I'm still developing a schedule to make these goals happen. I hope to compartmentalize each project and devote certain times of the day, week, and month to each of the three.

*One important factor to remember is our lives change constantly and so can our goals. If you have to change a short term goal, revise your writing process, or whatever you need to keep heading toward the final goal, it's okay. Just keep the ultimate purpose in your sights.
*Keeping a record of your daily/weekly writing progress helps to see how far you've come and can create momentum. (word count, chapter count, page count -- whatever your preference)
*Also, having a critique partner is a great way to keep yourself on track, as well as dangling rewards for yourself. This can keep the work fresh and fun and moving forward.

...Finished first half of book, treated myself to a massage. Now that's incentive!

New Year's Eve

Ringing in the new year is always a special time. A moment to reflect on the past and anticipate the future.

Every year I make New Years resolutions, whether written down on a piece of paper -- soon to be lost in a wave of endless clutter on my desk -- or locked away in the file cabinet of my mind.

This year I'm feeling particularly hopeful toward my resolutions and about keeping them. One resolution I have made over and over for the past dozen years or so, is about my writing. My lists have included various columns that have read something like this: Write everyday, write more, finish book, start new book, finish 1st book, think about next book, think about another book, write down ideas, learn to write, give up writing, don't give up writing, send out queries, write a synopsis...

During the past couple of years, I have finally achieved several writing goals. I have a novel completed with a second one nearly finished, and the beginnings of a third. I write almost everyday -- no matter what. I have been more consistent with my blog postings, and have a finished synopsis for my completed novel.

I definitely feel a sense of accomplishment in my world of writing. There is more work to do and I still have writing resolutions on my 2009 list.

Another aspect of my life that requires attention is my weight and health. My lists over the years regarding this area have included the following: eat less, exercise more, lose weight, walk everyday, walk three times a week, walk two times a week, walk sometimes, drink more water, give up ice cream, no more candy, cut down on beer, buy skim milk, eat more salads... hmm. Well, you get the idea.

I won't bore you with my actual list of resolutions for the coming year, just know it will include the obligatory weight and writing items. :)

Also, a special thank you to my little buddy, Mickey, for keeping me in the race, heading for the goal.

I can write anywhere. Taking pen and paper in hand, I can settle into a cozy chair, a park bench, on the beach, a corner table in Borders, or anywhere my imagination takes me. I love scratching out ideas for characters, plot lines, and settings.

However, the real down and dirty, nitty gritty work of writing happens at my desk on my computer. When I'm hunkered over, pounding at the keys, checking my scraps of paper, flipping through my "ideas" notebook, this is when the writing is happening.

Writing is just plain hard work. Whether you write short stories, poetry, screenplays, novellas, or a long, complex novel, the process of writing and getting the work done has to happen.

Each writer has to discover what process works for them. What time of day do you write? Morning, afternoon, late into the night? For most of us, we have busy, complicated lives where finding the time and place to write is a monumental hurtle to overcome. We squeeze in a few minutes here and there, an hour or two in between working, commuting, socializing, and the day to day business of living. Often we are slaves to whatever our hectic schedules dictate.

Over the past year, I have pushed myself to write everyday, no matter what. Even if it's only five minutes before I go to bed, or ten minutes before I head off to the day job, I force myself to write. Doing this I have developed a process of writing that works for me. With writing everyday, I keep my work-in-progress fresh in my mind and the desire to forge ahead keeps me focused.

Okay, my desk rarely looks like the photo above.

Admittedly, this is the usual organized chaos that is my work space. Perhaps someday I'll have a laptop computer to haul around everywhere. For now I'm satisfied with my spiral notebook and my personal computer sitting on my desk.

My Writing Journey -- Continued

My frustrations over not finishing my YA novel Backstage Summer culminated with my discovery of reading romance. I picked up my first "romance" novel sometime in the mid 1990's. I love to read and spent years reading all sorts of fiction and literary novels. One overcast Sunday afternoon, I was in the local grocery store picking up something for dinner for myself and my husband, and as was my habit, I would peruse the paperback section to see what new and interesting stories were on the shelves. I never paid attention to any of the books with obvious bodice-ripped covers, or anything I considered romance. I didn't know anything about the genre so I was a romance novel snob.

I stood and stared at the variety of books when an interesting cover and title caught my attention: The cover was a solid pale-blue color with a small picture of an antique shop. Hmm, intriguing. The title was Hidden Riches. So I picked it up and read the story blurb. It was about a woman in her late twenties who runs an antique/curio shop and rents a room to a troubled ex-cop. Together they become involved in uncovering a smuggling ring, and fall in love in the process. Hmm, sounded promising. I bought it, took it home, and read it.

I couldn't put it down, I loved it! The blend of suspense, mystery, passion, and compelling believable characters captured my heart.

It was my first romantic suspense novel and it's written by Nora Roberts. At the time I'd never heard of her. Now I've read several of the dozens of novels she's written.

I was still fiddling with Backstage Summer, still hiding behind the illusion of actually writing the YA book. Meanwhile I went on a romance novel reading binge. For several years, I read dozens and dozens of romance novels -- mostly longer ones -- and discovered I loved them. I adore the blend of sexual tension, conflict, suspense, and the emotionally satisfying ending. My preferred genres are contemporary, contemporary romantic suspense, and historical suspense. Although the paranormal genre has fast become one of the most popular in romance and YA, it isn't my cup of coffee. :)

In the Spring of 2003, I went through a divorce from my husband, sold my house, quit my job, and moved from Massachusetts to Maine. Each of these changes are monumental in of themselves, but doing them all in one month was life-changing to say the least.

Living in a small cottage in the woods of Maine with my two felines, Coco and Lilly, the idea for my first romance novel blossomed in my mind.

In March of 2004, I joined Romance Writers of America, and became a member of the local chapter located in Brunswick, Maine. I met several romance writers and authors in the group, and felt like I'd finally found my writing niche. I also bought two books on writing romance, and so began my new journey as a writer of romance novels. I worked for several months to understand the dynamics of writing a long, complex novel. I dissected two of my favorite books -- Hidden Riches being one of them -- to comprehend what made it work, and why it worked for me.

And then the long, arduous, difficult road of having a finished manuscript in my hand was before me. I was determined to write and rewrite, and continue on writing until I was finished. Three years later, my first manuscript Summer Light was finally completed. It is a 110,000 word passionate, contemporary romance with elements of suspense. Most definitely my cup of Starbucks coffee!

My Writing Journey -- The Early Years

In first grade, I wrote and illustrated my first book titled Billy Goes to the Hospital. It was a gripping tale of poor little Billy who breaks his leg and ends up in the hospital. The nurses and doctors take good care of him, and soon he goes home with his mother and father. My first grade teacher helped me write out the letters for the text. Not bad for age six.

Back in my very young years, I was obsessed with all things "hospital". I wanted to be a nurse. By the time I was in the first grade, I'd had already had my one overnight stay in a hospital to have my tonsils removed -- that was all the rage back in the late fifties and early sixties -- so most of my early writing involved hospital stories. I then moved on to stories about school and camp. Having attended overnight camp at the age of eight, I was on my "summer camp" kick for a couple of years.

After all, we writers usually write what we know. :)

I was extremely lucky growing up. I had a mother and father, two older sisters, and a younger brother. I had a built in set of friends, and we all shared the thrill of creating stories in common. (see my earlier post A Family of Writers) There were many weekends that were very "Little Women" in our home. We would spend all day Saturday and Sunday writing a play, choosing the roles, memorizing the lines, figuring out the props and costumes, and then by Sunday afternoon or evening, our very supportive and patient parents would sit down and endure whatever production we presented to them.

All through junior and senior high school, I wrote short stories and poetry -- almost always keeping it private. At fourteen, I wrote a play for my ancient history class. I wasn't doing well in the class so for extra credit I decided to write a play. My teacher seemed to love it, so the next thing I knew I was in charge of producing, directing and acting in my own play. I had been taking acting lessons and had been involved in several plays (our home theater included) since I was six, so I embraced my production. After several weeks of rehearsals, and along with five of my classmates, my play was performed in front of an assembly of classes at school. Very cool. I do believe I received an A in ancient history that term. :)

My favorite writer when I was a teenager was YA author, Betty Cavanna. She wrote nearly a hundred books from the 1940's all the way into the 1990's. She was a wonderful writer of stories involving young adult women. Her stories were filled with beautiful prose capturing the emotional essence of struggling to grow up in middle-class American society. Her characters always felt like real breathing young women dealing with a myriad of problems and conflicts. Her stories reached beyond the ABC Afternoon Special pap. They were filled with vibrant emotions, endearing characters, stunning settings; heart-wrenching stories involving everything from racial tensions, sibling rivalry, school, death, divorce, and teenage romance.
Her books (many I still own and read again on occasion) also always have an emotionally optimistic ending.

I decided I wanted to write a book as memorable and poignant as Betty Cavanna!

So began my journey as a writer for young people. I became a member of the Society of Children's Book Writers and Illustrators. http://www.scbwi.org/ Something I highly recommend for anyone interested in the pursuit of writing for young people. I worked for years on short stories for children and younger teens. Now they call them tweens, I believe. I also began to write my young adult novel, Backstage Summer.

Backstage Summer is about fifteen-year-old Jamie Sims who moves to a new town in Massachusetts and becomes involved in the local summer stock theater. She develops a friendship with the theater owner's teenage son, and a desire to perform in one of the summer productions. The plot thickens with the discovery of a mysterious boy hiding out in the theater attic.

My time (when not working at my day jobs in retail or banking) was filled with learning the skills I needed to write and complete Backstage Summer. I took writing classes, joined critique groups, attended conferences and retreats, and read a variety of books on writing. For years, I wrote and revised and rewrote the first ten chapters of Backstage Summer. I worked hard toward understanding the development of characterization and the complexities of writing a longer story. Although I continued to work on the book, I had trouble bringing it to completion.

I finally realized that I either had to finish the darn book, or reevaluate the kind of writing and stories that truly inspired me.

There was a current of change blowing on the wind...

Published Friends

In the past few weeks, several members of my local RWA chapter, Tampa Area Romance Authors, have had new books published.

First I would like to say a special congratulations to Elissa Wilds on the publication of her first book Between Light and Dark. Elissa's book is a paranormal story full of magic and romance.

Buy A Book Day

When the new book sales results for October were released by the top booksellers, the news was bleak. The tough economy is hitting the book business hard just like everything else. Published authors will have to work harder to keep their books on the shelves. Unpublished writers struggling to get agents and editors to take an interest in their work, will have less of a chance to become published.

There is something we can do to help. Buy a new book. Head to your local Borders or Barnes and Noble, or Wal-Mart, or Target, whatever bookseller is your preference, and buy a book.
Buy your favorite cookbook author, or romance, western, or horror. How about a children's book or perhaps young adult? There is a book out there for everyone. And with the holidays fast approaching, what better gift to give.

Holidays?

Uh, not yet.

I can't quite fathom why people feel the need to decorate for Thanksgiving and Christmas hours after the trick or treaters have stripped off their Halloween costumes. (or so it seems)

According to my calendar, Thanksgiving isn't until November, 27th this year, and Christmas falls on well.... December 25th.

I do understand the retailers getting the holiday stock on the shelves ready to nab as many of those end-of-the-year shopping dollars as possible. (especially in this unstable economy) And I like to start my Christmas shopping early to ease the pressure on my pocketbook. :) But, decorating for Christmas nearly two months early is really too much.

When we were young, the thrill of spotting the first Christmas lights on someones tree or house was really special, and it usually happened the week leading up to Christmas.

I feel sorry for the small children and their parents who have to be assaulted with Christmas advertising, television specials, movies, parties, as well as a Santa Claus waving at us from every mall, store, and street corner. It's beyond my comprehension that any child could actually believe in the existence of "Santa Claus" in this kind of hyped up society.

I say all this because Christmas has always been one of my favorite times of year, and it's sad to see it stretched into a two month (or longer) ordeal instead of the special, magical time it could and should be.

Contest Season (Part 2)

For anyone seriously considering entering the Golden Heart Contest, I have a few comments on the pursuit of entering contests.

Many contests through the RWA chapters for unpublished writers offer a variety of enticements. Usually, the final judges are editors from publishing houses looking for new authors, occasionally they are agents seeking new clients. Sometimes published authors offer a full manuscript critique as a winning prize. Some contests award a small cash prize for the top winner. Some a piece of jewelry, some the entry fee for a local or national conference. All of them charge a fee for entering. This fee is to support the individual RWA chapter.

Know your contest, understand what type of contest you're entering, and what genre/category to submit your manuscript. Make certain it's the right contest for you and your work. Be careful not to randomly enter every contest you see advertised.

I enter very few contests for a variety of reasons. The first is about money. RWA chapters sponsoring contests usually charge anywhere from $10.00 to $40.00. The national Golden Heart is the most expensive I've found at $50.00. I'm also aware of the final judges lined up for a particular contest, if they are for a publishing house I know doesn't publish my category/length of work, I won't enter. I also haven't entered any contests that accept only electronic submissions -- yet.

Most contests are for a small part of your manuscript, such as the first chapter, first 25 pages, a particular scene, and some are for query letters, some for the synopsis, etc.

One of the most important elements in entering contests is that most of them offer a critique of your work even if you're not a finalist. This is the best part about entering in my opinion. :)

Again learn as much as you can about the contest and chapter sponsoring the contest. Know ahead of time whether the contest offers critiques so you won't be disappointed if you don't receive one.

The Golden Heart does not offer a manuscript critique. However, if you final you have the thrill and national esteem of being a finalist. The final editors then read the manuscripts and make their decision in choosing one winner for each category.

Of course the best part of entering a contest is the possibility of catching the eye of an interested editor and perhaps signing a contract to be published. Very cool!

Contest Season

Romance Writers of America and the multitude of RWA chapters throughout North America offer a myriad of contests all throughout the year. Any genre, style and length are available to the published and unpublished writer.

Right now the national RWA organization is accepting applications and payment for their annual RITA and GOLDEN HEART contests.

The RITA is open to any published writer who had a book copyrighted in the year 2008. For more detailed information check out the RWA website. http://rwanational.org/

The GOLDEN HEART contest is open to any unpublished writer with a completed manuscript who hasn't contracted with a publisher as of the application deadline.
The cost is $50.00 and the deadline to get your application and money in to the national RWA headquarters is: November 17th, 2008! (December 1st for RITA entrants)

There are usually over 1000 entries for each the GOLDEN HEART and RITA contests. The competition is tough, but can be rewarding if one makes it to the finalists round.

Writing and Critiquing

One positive aspect of being a writer is all the wonderful talented writers we meet during our long and challenging journey. Writing is an individual process where we each learn and explore our own way to write. We all write in different styles, genres and voices. Some of us write fast and furiously, and some of us lope along at the speed of a slimy slug. It's what makes writing so exciting and rewarding.

Often times we are called upon to lend our services to our fellow writers in the form of critiquing. Whether we are a member of a writing class, involved in a writing group, or share our work with an individual critique partner, having our work critiqued is an important, necessary part of our writing journey, and it's one of the most difficult.

It's hard to hand our personal writing over to anyone -- including a friend, teacher, or stranger to be critiqued. But best to have their input before submitting your baby to an editor or agent.

Often times, I will be involved in judging a contest. This is fun because it's anonymous, and it allows us the freedom to be honest without creating hurt feelings. Of course, when I judge, I attempt to be as kind, gentle and diplomatic as possible -- making suggestions rather than telling someone what to do to make their story better. After all, it's only my opinion.

Remember all writers are at different levels in their writing -- from beginners all the way to professional, published writers.

Some basic rules to follow when critiquing:

*Make comments and suggestions -- do not rewrite their work
*Be encouraging
*Remind the writer that this is your opinion
*Point out the great lines as well as the sentences that could use revising
*Put in a smiley face or two :)
*Keep in mind the writing level of your author
*Remember, there is always something to learn when reading other writer's work
*Be professional
*Enjoy the process
*Critique unto others as you would want them to critique for you.

Friends and Writers

One of the great advantages of being a writer in the 21st century is we have myriad ways to socialize and network with other writers. The computer and the availability of the Internet allows us to communicate with family, friends and like-minded people from all over the globe. Amazing to be sure.

I'd like to introduce a fellow writer who fits into all three of those categories for me. He is family, a friend, and a fiction writer. How lucky am I?

Hope and Romance

As an unpublished writer, my desire is to be published. I work hard at my writing; learning and honing my craft, however it's equally important to know and understand the complex world of publishing. My goal is to have my contemporary romance manuscript, Summer Light, contracted and published by a top publisher in the industry. I've set my sites high, however, there are a variety of other opportunities in the world of book publishing.

There are the well-known New York publishers, smaller presses, vanity presses, e-publishing, self-publishing and everything in between.

According to the Romance Writers of America, romance fiction generated approximately $1.375 billion in sales in 2007! Wow.

That said, the competition is more intense than ever. RWA has a membership of around 10,000. That's plenty of romance happening. :) With the invention of word processing and the ease of computers, it's possible for anyone to sit down and pound out a novel. But the writer must know the basics of good writing and how to tell a compelling story.

I believe I've written a solid story filled with passion, hope, and romance. :)

First Year Anniversary

Autumn Begins

In central Florida, the beginning of fall is a time for celebration with lower temperatures and less humidity. Finally the days are cooling off just a bit, and the snow birds are beginning to trickle back to the sub-tropical climate.

Being from New England and never liking the cold weather, fall was always a tough time for me. I loved the brisk air, the vibrant colors of the leaves, and the anticipation of the coming holidays, but the shorter days and the long cold nights were not always easy.

Now living in Florida I miss all that I loved in New England, and actually wish I could see the soft falling snow again. There is nothing more beautiful than white snow against a backdrop of a stark blue sky and evergreen trees.

The best part of being a writer is to be able to choose any setting and fill it with compelling, believable characters. I'm planning my third book to take place during the winter months in Massachusetts....I guess I'll have to move back.

Will I ever be content? Call me crazy! :)

Wonderful Weekend

I had a fantastic, relaxing, inspirational weekend at our TARA retreat! What could be better than being among fellow romance writers? We spent our time writing, plotting, and critiquing. As well as chatting, drinking, eating, and shopping. :) We also enjoyed the entertaining and wonderfully romantic movie, Ever After.

We stayed at the Lido Beach Holiday Inn overlooking the sparkling blue waters of the Gulf of Mexico complete with amazing sunsets in a dazzling array of scarlet, indigo, and pink.

Thanks to Vicki Lane, Jean Mason and to many of the Tampa Area Romance Authors for allowing us to enjoy such a beautiful weekend! :)

Writing Retreat

This coming weekend I'm heading off to a writing retreat in Sarasota, FL sponsored by the Tampa Area Romance Authors. I'm looking forward to a couple of days of relaxing, eating, drinking, socializing, critiquing and hopefully....writing. :)

I will be taking my laptop -- an old fashioned spiral notebook with lined pages -- and sitting by the pool, or on the beach, or in my hotel room....writing. No writing on the computer this weekend. It will be interesting to see how many of my fellow TARA members at the retreat will have electronic writing devices.
